I just like to remove the whole grille from the hood so I can thoroughly clean it and the mounting surface on the hood prior to reinstalling. It's also a good opportunity to clean the hood latch and that part right behind the hood grille, on the hood underside.

I've had the grills of all four Mercedes I've owned at one time or another. There's nothing to it. I've never had to acquire any rubber from the dealer. It's a simple operation. No reason not to do it in my opinion.

I installed a new plastic insert, hood pull, and "chrome" strips soon after I bought my car. Cost less than 50 bucks and really made a difference vs the chipped and faded insert, coat hanger, and dented strips they replaced. A nice intro into how easy and cheap it is to work on these cars.

Yeah, its not too bad of a job to remove the whole thing. I wanted to clean it up and replace the tape cause it was old and visable from the top of the hood. Not everyone would necessarily need to replace the tape/intermediate, just depends on condition.
I also felt that it would be easier with the thing off, sitting in a comfortable chair, and reassembling the surround/issert/trim pieces in my lap. Rather than standing with a weird arch in your back, working over your head, etc. like I did while obtaining parts from a donor vehicle in the salvage yard.
