1976 240D Istrument Cluster Fuse Shorting

Hi everyone - I am relative new to Mercedes but I got a lot of help here before on a starting issue which was solved and made the car run like a dream.
The other night the instrument cluster lights went out. I checked in the morning and the fuse was blown so I replaced it. I wanted to see if it would blow so I left the fusebox open while I turned on the head lights to activate the dash lights. Big blue zap and it was blown. Anyone had this happen to them ?
It's the number 7 fuse slot with an 8amp white fuse controlling the running lights, instrument cluster, license plate and ashtray light I believe....
thanks !!
