98 E300 sometimes wont crank
Could this be another K40 fix ? sometimes when I put the key in it wont turn. Other times it will turn to the run position but wont crank. If I play with it I can get it running but I want to fix it before it hard fails. Any ideas ??
Thanks, Scott

Answer
If the key fails to turn = the tumbler is going bad..
Ignition Cylinder Tumbler replacement; mixed diesel/gas http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?p=1065596 Have a great day.

I don't know about "tumblers", that being ye olde electronic key and all...
Do you hear the column unlock when you insert the key? The times you can't turn the key, are you hearing the unlock sound?

I always get the unlocking sound but sometimes the key wont turn and other times it will turn to the run position but not crank. so far I just take the key out and turn it over and hold my tounge in a different position and it works on the second or third try but if it fails on the wife I will be in the dog house. sounds like the tumbler to me also.

This thing has a different starting device. The key has no mechanical "teeth" in it to operate a tumbler.
The identity of the key is established electronically from the socket in the dash - the key is either the right one or it is not and if it is the right key the system responds as you would want it to and the car starts. The same if it is the wrong key - the system does not allow the process to continue and as you would want, the car does not start if the wrong key is inserted in the socket. I would suspect the business end of the key has been either scratched or has a layer of dirt on it that is interfering in the "electronic handshaking" steps. This has happened to me before and a cleaning of the socket and the key has resolved the problem for me. Without a successful handshake between the key and the socket, there is no success - the computer figures the key is not for the car and won't accept it. Not that there can't be other problems... Good luck, Jim
