W123 300D - what is this wire?
Dear All,
I'm in the middle of cleaning up the floor pan (driver's side foot well) on my 300D and I've come across an already broken wire. (Honestly I didn't break it Chief!) As several electrical things don't work on the car I'm not sure what it is meant to be for. I haven't found the other end yet! It goes up to the fuse box next to the main bundle of wires but I don't know to which fuse it is connected. Before I rip out the fuse box can anyone tell me what it is for? Does it look like it is standard? Or is it likely to be an after market addition? Here is a photograph to show what I mean. Thanks in advance for any help / comments you may give. |

If the wire heads north to the fusebox, then perhaps removing the battery and using a continuity tester will be helpful. With one end attached to the wire, probe the fuse box until you find the circuit.
Once you have identified the circuit(s), remove the fuse to see which side it is on. Best of luck and let us know what you find.

Bad practice
Quote:
You are quite right I shouldn't give into my caveman urges to just rip stuff out without testing... However, in this case my gut feeling was right - it was an 'after market' addition. Unfortunately it was attached to the supply side of the fuse box so it just happened to be an unprotected live wire floating about in the bottom of the floor pan. It has been removed and it is now banished to the dust bin. |

Sorry I forgot to say - I didn't realise how easy it is to remove the fuse box (my experiences of other cars has been to leave well alone).
Is it normal that there is no gasket or seal between the fuse box and the bulkhead? Is it normal that once you have removed the fuse box cover in the engine bay you can either see into the driver's foot well or conversely look from the driver's foot well and see daylight? |
