Ready to put IP back in -question

Evening,

I took my IP out to replace the o ring. The old ring cracked when I pulled it off. I've got the lock pin in the IP, and the engine is still at 15 degrees ATDC. I'm wondering, when I put the IP back in should I use some sort of level to make sure its straight up and down? I noticed the holes in the IP where it bolts back there is space to move it a little. Does it make a difference if IP serrated shaft doesn't go back to the same slots in the block? Boy, am I tired. I've been working on this project since Sunday night. Thanks for your help.

Yep, the pump is slotted like that so you can adjust your pump timing, which I sort of referred to before in your last question. Hopefully a diesel guy can tell yo how to set your pump timing now. There is that adjuster on the front, I wouldn't turn that fixture at all, the best you can hope for is thatthe pump will end up in the same location as before, but in a case like this, the timing should probably be set again. You want to try to at least get it in the same location as before.

Install it in the middle of the slots, so if it's off you'll be able to rotate it a little inward/outward to get back into adjustment.
So install it like that (the 3 IP bolts and the center bolt), pull the lock out, turn engine to 15 atdc a second time, then put the lock back in and with the 3 bolts loose rotate the IP back and forth (with the adjustment screw?) in those slots 'til the tool locks.
Or maybe it'll already be spot on, my lock tool had a slot on it that I would twist with a flathead screwdriver, if it twisted then it was not locked.
