Ok, fingers crossed, after another weekend of working on the car, where unfortunately I did lose some of my project focus and not completely close in the hole because of the world cup, Im ready to actually drive this thing upstate 330 miles, sans all seats plus the driver seat.

My route will be west across the tappan zee bridge from southern CT (which should shake off any loose parts), north on 87 towards albany, and west on 90 towards Syracuse.

If I do not post back within 24 hours of this post, well, we all know what happened.

As a perhaps ominous omen, I slapped a triple A sticker on the trunklid for luck, and within 15 minutes a bird relieved itself onto only the sticker. I have chosen to see this sign as I won't be needing triple A.

I am taking with me tools, ramps, a jack, and jack stands. If you are cruising along that route later this week and see a brown MB rusting on the side of the road and a broken looking man sitting dejectedly on the trunk wrapped in a blanket, feel free to stop and give me a lift! Im probably late for work

I made it, very very pleased. The car got just over 32 mpg with 4 soft compound snow tires on it and no valve adjustment yet!
Average highway speed was between 70 and 75. Not exactly sure how off the speedo is, need to find out what the rear end in the 1984 190E is so I can calculate where I am plus or minus on the speedo.

Got two safety violation tickets as well. Damn cops. No license plate illumination, missing inspection sticker, and a warning on front license plate mounting.

Also, next to repair is low beams, both are out, could be wiring issue or bad bulbs, passenger side wiper crapped out, wipers only come on when you hit the washer fluid button, maybe switch on the stalk has had it.

That is good milage for the speed you were doing.
The speedometer is geared to the differential. Do you think the over drive will throw it off some. the 240D auto and 4-spd are 1:1 in high gear. the OD could be a factor in calculating the milage.

Need a GPS to see where you are at for your speed and miles driven.

So, the Frankin 5-spd made her maiden voiage with flying colors.

You are right, Damn Cops.

Yeah! it took almost an entire year, but its finally working! No ominous noises or harmonic issues yet. What with the hole over on the passenger side, there is a hell of a lot of noise going on, but most undercar stuff is amplified tremendously into the cabin, so I have about 15 different noises to obsess about as I am driving. Engine noise tends to come up through the floor as well, so thats adding a factor.
I have not heard anything yet that I can specifically pin on the tranny though, but I will really only be supremely confident after a few thousand miles, call it a couple months of driving.

OD is definitely having an effect on the speedo, need a tach as well. Forgot my GPS, but I will have someone clock me tomorrow after todays little interview with the police.

Got to fix those headlights though ASAP, id say 1 in 3 truckers flashed me over 200 miles of driving, still kinda blinded. They hated those euro lamps, thats for sure.

Where can I get those bulbs, is that something I can grab at auto zone?

Get a good set of ear plugs

Are those euro lights H-4 with the 3 prongs? you can get them at any auto supply, probably 65/55 W or what ever they are.

H-4, I think so, thanks, I will look into that tomorrow.

Forgot to mention that #1 issue with the swap as far as it being in use is that you can't load a CD into the stereo with the car in overdrive! Seems like a little thing, but its pretty annoying. Have to advance in my auto technology to an ipod I think and use the aux in

You will have to go high tech and install one of those CD units in the trunk that
holds a bunch of them.

decided the "march of dimes" shifter bushing mod will have to go. At first I really liked the harder shift, but now after using the car all day, Ive decided that its overly clunky, the rubber bushing under the handle does a lot for actual shift feel.

Failed state inspection today. Failure grace period should keep the cops off me long enough to fix some of the lights

lights and wipers fixed with the exception of the reverse lights. Balanced and installed bundts this morning with decent all weather tires from the 300TD and the car looks WAY better already. Its going in for paint on monday on the fenders, so hopefully my co workers will stop laughing at me soon . Then it will just be an old brown car with faded paint, not a heap.

Checked with GPS, and it turns out that the speedo is off in the plus favor about 5-6 mph. 65=70 and so on. I can live with that, so I won't be changing the speedo over to the 201 chassis deal.

I LOVE this car otherwise, with the speedo information, I kept the car to 70 yesterday, and it got 33.4 mpg this time over 330 miles, even with all the windows down on the highway. Does not leak at all, but it could use some engine mounts. Will put this on the list.

Valve adjustment today, and fluid and filters change.

I could make that argument if I put the other seats in, close up the floor, and put all the interior panels missing back in. I guess it can't be ugly AND uncomfortable.

yesterday one of the "decent all weather tires from the 300TD" exploded violently, so I bought two new rear tires, and went way up in size.

I moved the two good tires from the TD to the front, which are 185/70 R14s, and bought two 205/75 R14s for the rear. I personally am a big fan of large tires, so I love the way they look. Id like a set of 4, but the other two tires are nearly 95% tread life on them, so I will be patient.

Few more pics, ready for another 5hr drive. Looks better already with the bundts, can't wait to see how the paint turns out!

Today fluids change took place, fabricated a little bracket to hold the oil cooler lines since I removed the A/C compressor, put in some exhaust hangers, and re-shimmed the driver seat so its level.

paint turned out great

Of course, you all know what this means, the rest of the car looks terrible in comparison. Now I have to try and bring the rest of the paint back as close as I can to the new fenders.

If this is what this brown originally looked like, I like it way more than I used to.
