I'll get back under the car when I get home in a few hours.

I fixed it. I removed the belt, remounted the compressor and put the belt back on.

The belt was still too tight to pull onto the pulley by hand so we cranked the engine to put the belt into place.

just a guess, but i believe some of the ac systems on these cars are dealer installed and some were factory. if that means there were 2 or more possibilities for the types of compressors, you may have the belt for a different compressor.

Removing belts...

Hello, not to hijack this thread but, my a/c doesn't work on my '84 300D Turbo Diesel... and I'm trying to isolate the rattling engine noise(s). Question, can I just remove the belts to the compressor since I don't use the a/c anyway? How will this affect the car? Thank you in advance.

I know this is an old thread...

but since it hasn't been answered, yes the car will run just fine without the AC belt.
