pulling transmission to fix leak, what else should i seal?

Hi. My friends 1983 300 SD is leaking tranny fliud very badly . The only place we can see it coming from is the torque converter area. I can smell it burning while I'm driving. It uses about a quart every 100 miles it seems.

So We planning to pull the transmission and replace the transmission seals. Are there any engine seals or anything else we should replace while we're at it? The car has 160,000 on it.

Thanks

No. The trans being out doesn't help you with the engine. Unless you're taking that out too.

trans pull

I think your SD has the same "kinda stuff" on it as my SDL

I would look at your cooler lines (about 12" with a spring wrapped around them)

and the hard lines that they attach to have "keepers"

these are bands that go around the hard line and use oil pan bolts
to "keep" them from hitting other suff

I have seen the rubber fall off or wear away on the keepers

than the line gets worn through and than you have major leaks (failure)

and to replace hard lines are pretty pricey
alittle rubber protection goes along way Ha!

just thought I'd mention this these little things get over looked

but are important to check/maintain

Since you got it out maybe replace drive shaft carrier bearing (22-28 bucks)

and check or replace rubber proplellar shafts if they look ratty

Thanks noah

I'll check that carrier bearing and the cooler lines. Good ideas to check everything . Thanks.

I've seen the metal cooler line get rubbed through by the clamp first hand. i got my last 85 300D cheap cause the mechanic said it was a seal and the tranny had to be pulled. But it turns out just the clamp rubbed through the metal line. This was about 3 years ago. I hacksawed the line and patched with a couple inch piece of 3/8 id fuel line and a couple clamps and its still going like that. I sold it a couple months ago and its been all over the country since. So don't spend big money on new metal lines . Just patch it up and go.

I know it's easy for me to spend your money

I'd put a trans temp gauge in

I have to because I need to put in an A- pillar pod
due to previous owners dog eating

A-pillar and dash pad so I need to cover it with a
gauge pod

Let me know what you find out

I get a little fluid in the bottom of the bellhousing

but I got I.P. issues to deal with first
