broken alternator belt

Yesterday, without warning, I heard a metallic noise as I was driving. Sounded like something hitting the fan blade. Pulled over and found 1 of the alternator belts broke and wrapped itself around the fan pulley hub. Alternator still charging on the second belt. I can take my time getting a new set of belts instead of doing emergency repair. Love it! What other car uses 2 alternator belts?

International-Harvester trucks used 2 alternator belts. My 1965, 1967, and 1968 Travelalls had them. I wish my 1968 Mercedes 200D used 2 alternator belts.

Classic over engineering....most V-belt MB's have dual belts except the small diesels.

The water pump's driven by that belt too... more important than the alternator.

any idea why the belt died? it's odd for a belt to grenade...
was it the outer? perhaps it was loose and popped off?

Don't take too much time. Also determine cause or at least make sure that belts have correct tension and that pulleys are aligned properly. Hopefully, it is only poor maintenance as belts should be changed before they break.

Exactly, get it replaced ASAP. If one snapped it must have been in pretty horrible shape. I replace belts on ours every few years...and have yet to have one fail....
