This may be a stretch being this is an international forum but what the heck? It's hot down here and I need a/c. I can't get my car to hold a vacuum after replacing the o-rings and to be honest I'm just ready to fork over the cash. Thanks

firstly, you should NEVER check for leaks with vacuum!
always pressurize and look with a sniffer or bubbles.
if you have a can of pure 134 you can use it to fill the system with GAS, not liquid. and search for hissing and bubbles. you'll find the leak. a mechanic is going to charge a fortune to fix it, and may not be any better at it than you are.
Nitrogen is the best way to pressurize and look for leaks, but most don't have it available.
you could take it in to a shop and have them pressurize it with N2 and 4oz of R22 and have them sniff for the leaks.

Thanks Tech. The short of it is the previous owner had a new compressor installed last August and when I got the car a few weeks later(shipped from CA) the ac didn't blow cold because of a leak I detected at the port connections at te compressor. Via phone the mech who did the work in CA, poorly obviously, suggested I change the o-rings and he sent me a set. The weather turned cool so I put it off til now. I used the green and metal rings with some nylog, evacuated the system with an ac vacuum pump, then looked to see if it held at 30Hg. Over a half hour period it went from 30 to 20, then 15 to 10 then close to nothing over an hour. Perhaps I didn't tighten the hose properly.
So, I'll check around for a shop to do that n2 you suggested. Thanks for your advice. Greatly appreciated from down here in swampland. It's gonna get hot.

the problem with vacuum checking is now you have hot moist air in your system! bad for your dryer, and the system! pressure keeps out moisture, and is better for finding leaks!

Worth the drive to do biz with Pete Schmidt in Mobile AL. I've always found Pete and his wife (who is a hoot) to be great to work with, and we drive over there from MS. Pete worked on my ac and it about freezes us out the car

I work in houma and theres a place called witty's automotive here. i've never got any work done with him but they always have old mercedes and bmws over there. might be worth it to check him out
