2.5 Turbo Boost Troubleshooting Advice for Cheap and Ignorant

Just to be clear, I would be the cheap and ignorant one. I don't want to spend much money chasing this down and I don't have nearly the expertise to address it on my own....

I had terrible acceleration on my 1992 300D due to bad pressure converters. Had them replaced. Things are much improved, but it's still sluggish on the low end. My 0-60 is 17 seconds (as oppposed to 12, which is what it should be). Fuel filters are fine, air filter is new.

I know that boost problems on my car can be terribly difficult to diagnose. I also know that the best solution is to convert to a pressure actuated wastegate, thereby eliminating all the EGR stuff. But, for now, I don't want to go that route.

The car has 222,000 miles on it. Do boost problems somewhat go with the territory when these cars get older, to the point where it's just something I might have to learn to live with? Or is there probably a simple cause that can be identified?

Maybe if I'm not willing to shell out the money for proper diagnosis there's not a lot that can be done. I guess I'm just looking for obvious things for me (or my tech) to check....like maybe cleaning the ALDA.

Thanks for listening and for any help anyone can offer.

Have you pulled the codes from the EDS computer? You can pull them using a analog voltage meter and count needle swings.

Any codes and the computer cuts boost/turbo.

Start there at the computer. Clear the codes. There is a procedure, you can't just disconnect the battery. Then drive around and see what comes up.

When I first got my 92 300D I didn't have turbo. Had to do some chasing of lines. Found the EGR and Intake Flap were swapped. Swapped back and all was well.

Turbo worked well for a while. Many months Then noticed I wasn't getting boost again. Pulled codes and had multiple codes pointing to vacuum switchover valves. Said the heck with it and switched over to Pressure activated system.

Hope that helps.
