Trust me, I have.

Glow plugs are great / nearly new with <15k on them
All filters are regularly checked/changed
Valve adj was done <15k ago
Compression is good
start up (even cold) is great
No smoke
Good power / throttle response
Engine sounds great
My 30-mile RT commute each day is on a mixed speed road ranging from 45mpg-65mph with a few lights interspersed.
Brakes aren't dragging

The only things at this point I have not exhausted are:
Injectors
IP timing
Replacing the cheap Michelins

I'm also coming off a bout with non-optimal oil and flushing in a few rounds of 15w40. The next OC at 171,500 I will be doing another valve adj, timing chain check and replacing a few leaking seals (turbo return, filter housing). If those items don't show some improvement, I'll be pulling the injectors for Monarch nozzles and pop/balance testing.

I just starting running the A/C again and that's where I'm getting the 18mpg.
