Om617 injection issues...
The car ran fine till i ran out of fuel one day.put fuel in it primed it and fired it up, ran fine. the same day driving home from the fiasco, the motor just starts to get a dead miss at idle on 1 or two holes,it evens out at higher rpms, and hits on all holes then. checked the output from the pump to the injectors at idle, and looks like the delivery is real low on cylinder 3,5..The pump is gone or is there a way to revive it?
Thanks, Boris S.

I believe your injection pump is probably just fine. You either got marginal fuel or the fuel supply part to the injection pump base part of the equation is suspect.
The second quickest test is to remove the injection pump return line and submerge the end of the hose in fluid. The fuel level should gain with no air in the fuel at idle. If it makes this test suspect fuel quality. If not you will know where to look. An even quicker test but less conclusive is to close off the return line at the injection pump. If there is no change in the idle or power it indicates that the base pressure feeding into the injection pump is inadaquate. The relief valve is not reaching its opening pressure. I personally would do the second quickest test by your description first. I cannot make things any easier for this area of troubleshooting and I have tried. Again either marginal fuel, Inadaquate volume and pressure or air. As you rev up the engine of course this masks things somewhat..Sounds more like air to me but that is why tests are needed. Sounding like or suspecting something is meaningless basically unless proven. By your post count have you ever checked your valve lash clearances? If you never have there is unfortunatly coincidence as well. Tight valve adjusters will mimick your description if the fuel supply checks out well too. Unlikely from your description but you have to keep an open mind. It is foolish not to check them every fifteen thousand miles anyways. My paranoia comes from having to tear cylinder heads off the gas mercedes versions years ago for burnt exhaust valves. This is not been an issue on the diesels but the cylinders can drop out at idle still if the valve lash is too tight. Last edited by barry123400; 05-28-2010 at 01:59 PM. |

A couple of possibles.
If you have the Old Style Hand Primer with the shiny Aluminum Body it could now allow air to be sucked in. When you run out of Fuel you often suck the scum off the bottom of the Tank. I would try changing both of the the Fuel Filters; if for not other reason then to eliminate them as a source of the problem. If there is a chance the Old filters might be good put them in a zip-lock bag and for later use.

I forgot to add that the scum can also restrict your Tank Screen.
