Like the title says, my friend is buying a 1991 or 1992 300D 2.5 Turbo and all 4 forward gears work, he actually going to drive it back from NC soon, but the owner says reverse does not work. Is it probably something catastrophic like a band or are those somewhat easy to change springs I read about to blame?

How many miles? The trannies on these last 200-250k. The same thing happened to mine at 220K. Reverse just stopped working. My mechanic cracked it open and said it was the band. I ended up rebuilding while it was torn apart. Good for another 200K now. Good luck.

It's probably got the same problem as mine... the front cage bit that holds the reverse brake snaps off. It's not an expensive part, but the trans has to come out to replace it.
