W115 - Difference between 240D and 300D ?

Hi guys,
Still trying to feel my way through these old Diesels before pulling the trigger on one... Bear with me!

So I'm mostly looking at the W115 and the W123. As far as I can tell, when talking about the W123, 240D is the normally aspirated 5-cyl, while the 300D is a turbo 5-cyl. Is this correct?

Now, my real question: It seems to me that on the W115 chassis, both the 240D and 300D are N/A 5-cyls... No turbodiesel on the W115, is this true? If so, then what is the difference between the 240D and the 300D on the W115?

Thanks!

A 240D whether it be a W123 or W115, is a NA 2.4 liter 4 cylinder motor.

A W115 300D is a 3.0 liter NA 5 cylinder.

A W123 300D 77-81 is a NA 5 cylinder, 82-85 5 cylinder Turbo diesel.

Yes, for North American versions. But all Euro versions through 85 will be non-turbo versions. An exception is the Japanese market, which received both turbo and non turbo variants through 85.

Correct, sorry I should have stated that it only applies to the USV's.

Not entirely true, Europeans could shell it out for turbo wagons.

We're talking 300Ds here, not 300TDs.

Welcome to the Forum, Kev.

240 refers to the displacement of the engine, as does 300. 300TD is Touring Diesel, meaning station wagon. 300CD is Coupe Diesel- 2 door coupe.

300D

KevRC4130,

IF, you can find a "Cherry" W123 with the 3.0 liter Turbodiesel ,You're GOLDEN!

I love the 240D , But on the Highway @ 80MPH the Noise is disconcerting.

The 1985 version of the W123 300D is a TANK! (Longevity)

Ok, cool, that all makes sense. Do you happen to have HP figures for each engine?

Since neither are turbo, is the non-turbo 300D a legitimate upgrade over the 240D? Obviously a lot of people have something to say about the 240D's unbearable slowness, so does the non-turbo 300D have enough power to be noticeably more usable?

Thanks everyone!

I do not know what it is like in other countries but from reading the Forums here in the US the 123 Diesels seem the have better parts availability.

The W115 240D 74-76 had 65 HP.
The W115 300D 75-76 had 80 HP.

I drive my 76 300D everyday and it keeps up with traffic just fine, even with the AC on. 0-60 is about 22 seconds On the highway I can cruise along nicely at 70-75.

The W123 240D had 72 HP.
The W123 NA 300D had 80 HP. The later ones had 88 HP.
The W123 Turbo 300D had about 123 HP.

I understood the 240D to have 62hp (MB Dimension '74 catalog) and the 300D 77hp.
