240D speedometer question

I found an 80 240D in a u-pull-it yard yesterday, and scored a bunch of miscellaneous stuff for my car, including a usable seat, good window regulators, a passenger side mirror which my car did not come with, a new hazard switch and a instrument cluster.

I already discovered that the seat tracks are nothing like mine, but I finally got all that changed around and I don't have to sit on a pile of cushions anymore.

The instrument cluster looks identical to mine, and I need a new speedo. The odometer works on mine, but not the speedo. But just before I started to pull mine out today, I remembered that the car I pulled the new one out of was an automatic, and mine is a four speed. Any chance that those speedos are the same, or am I still looking for one?

My car is a 77, is that makes any difference.

The spedometers are geared to the Differential, not the transmission. doesn`t make any difference if they are auto or manual trans.

The diff gear ratio is stamped on the lower left corner of the housing, looking at it from the rear. scrape off the dirt, grease and rust. the last 3 # are the ratio.

Although the speedos have the same gearing you will find (unbelievably actually) that the speedo hash marks are slightly slower on the automatic equipped cars to compensate for slip.

Those Germans are sticklers for detail!

I would not hesitate to use them interchangibly....just posted this for a humorous (but true) smiler.

What was different about the seat tracks, should be the same.

I guess my question would have been better asked as do the auto cars likely have a different differential ratio? I'll go back to the yard next week, and see if that car is still there so I can look at the diff.

The seat tracks on my car had an extra adjustment with a handle coming out to the side of the seat. It lets you adjust the seat up a little. All the tracks on mine, and especially this part, were really stiff and hard to move and it took me a long time to move the seat into a position where I could even see the rear bolts that hold it to the floor. I managed to loosen it up a little with penetrating oil, but at some point I'll probably take the whole thing apart all the way and see if I can get it working more smoothly. The seat out of the 80 didn't have that and it was way simpler to take the seat tracks off. The seat belt buckle mounted differently, too, but I was able to use mine and make it work. I was putting a passenger seat from the parts car into the driver's position in my car, hence all the switching around of parts.

The autos and sticks carry the same diff ratio. The seats should unbolt from the floor pan and interchange fully.

Cheers,

it was at the foster road yard. the driver's seat was already gone when I got there, and I took the passenger side.
