Door lock Barrel on 84 SD

OK. Drivers door lock was stuck, couldn't turn the key. Pulled the handle assembly out of the door. Was told that you could remove the barrel as a unit IF you could turn the key.
Still trying to remove the barrel.
Worked it loose enough so that all the tumbler leaves came out, 2 were sheared in half, so that's why it was sticking, so now it rotates at least, but cannot remove barrel itself from handle assembly.
The collar that forms the top of the barrel so it sits under the chrome plate of the door handle appears to be as of one unit with the barrel. If you looked in cross section it would have the same profile as a bolt.
So I cant't work it back through the chrome door handle surround to pull it out, and the handle mechanism that works the door latch from the inside prevents removing it from below.
Do I need to get a whole new door handle asssembly with key then ? am I missing something ?
Help !
All suggestions gratefully accepted
thanks.

what I do is get a few handles from the junkyard, and pull leaves out of them, then match them up according to the leaves in the other door you have that works...
voila! working door handles.

Since the drivers door get used the most, would it be better to get the passenger door handle, and use those leaves for the drivers door?

Are the 123 & 126 door handles similar or the same in the way they disassemble?

I had a problem several yrs ago with the DS handle. don`t remember if the key just went round n round or wouldn`t lock, anyway removed it thinking I could remove the lock tumbler. complicated looking thing, so went to the indy for answers. He said to just replace the handle. so ordered it, came with new lock tumbler and all is good.
Pricy way to go. this was on the 85 300D.

Now out to the barn to find that old handle................

Ok
So I guess my next question is; does anyone have an affordably priced, used but not abused, working door handle with working barrel and key that suits an 84 300 SD, 126 ?
I'm located in LA

cheers

Trying to help a friend with stuck handles.
83 300D. Key will not turn in either handle but works ignition. He just got the car from teh previous owner. I havnt checked if they ever operated the door locks. not sure if trunk lock works either.

Is the removal of the handle assembly as easy as that of a VW/Audi?

there are two pins that hold the lock barrel in the handle; i 'm guessing the ignition lock was changed and there is no key for the doors or the trunk-might want to take the title/registration to a mercedes dealer and order a new key that will operate the doors and trunk. the dealer can also order a new tumbler so that you only need one key . if you're cheap like me (and lucky at times); i would check out the pull your own parts type junk yards and see if you can find a w123 that happens to have two keys with it- i scored two keys, ignition lock, door handle locks and trunk locks from a low mileage w126 for $15

p.s. not sure on the w123, but on the w126 if you have the key for the doors the handles come out easy-if you don't then you need to take the inner door panel off to get the handles out

Why you need to fix the lock? This is what I would do if you can open the passenger side door with a key, any key. Just install keyless remote in the car. End of all the problems. It costs $30 or less if you do it yourself - kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Sorry to bring back a new thread but, I am in the process of trying to un-freeze a tumbler. You said shadtree777 that there are 2 pins that hold the tumbler into the handle? could you perhaps elaborate a little more on where those pins are? or even a picture? ANYONE?

Thanks ALL

Anyone? Ideas? I've done it before but that was over 6 years ago... Now I'm trying to fix it for a friends car and can't decide which way the tumbler comes out
