transmission drain plug??

1981 300D

Hi Guys,

I crawled under my car yesterday to see the layout of the transmission plugs, hoses, etc...to attempt an oil change today.

I was expecting, based on this board and the Haynes manual, 6 oil pan bolts and a 5 mm hex drain plug.

But actually I found 4 pan bolts, no hex drain plug, and a bolt that attaches the filler pipe to the oil pan. This bolt is leaking by the way. I went to the dealer and they gave me, free of charge, 2 aluminum O-rings that seal the bolt.

Is the filler pipe bolt where you drain the oil from? Any suggestions for the torque?

Thank you.

The fill tube is attached to the tranny by means of a banjo fitting and hollow bolt. You drain the tranny by removing the bolt for the fill tube (loosen the bolt a bit and the majority of fluid will drain out, with most of the rest coming when you remove it). The 5mm allen plug is the drain on the torque converter. There are 6 bolt and 4 bolt pans, obviously your's is a 4 bolt .

There is a torque value, but it is in inch pounds not foot pounds. Book calls for .7 or .8 mkp. You do not want to over tighten or you will cut the new seal. A 1/4 drive ratchet should help in not overtightening the bolts.

Try doing a serach on transmission pan torque, the value has been posted.

The torque spec. for the trans. pan bolts is just 5.2 Ft-lbs. The torque converter drain plug is 11 Ft-lbs. Basicly tighten the bolts until they are snug. I don't know of any torque wrench that goes down to 5 Ft-lbs. BTW the conversion for Ft-lbs to inches and vise versa. Ft-lbs to inches: multiply the foot pounds by 12 to get inches. To convert inches to foot pounds: divide the inches number by 12.
