water leak - front passenger floor board
chasing a water leak on the 1984 300DT. after heavy rain storms, front passenger and rear passenger carpets were soaked. removed the carpets. took a garden hose and had a friend sit in the car looking for leaks with a flash light. first, turned the garden hose onto the front passenger door, no leaks. next, turned the hose on the rear passenger door, no leaks. next, turned the hose about halfway up the front windshield, no leaks. next, turned hose on sunroof, and BINGO, water leak began running down front passenger side floorboard coming from under the dash. so....I'm thinking it is the front sunroof drains. only problem, I can't find where the front sunroof drains begin and end so that I can clear the drain holes....

Check hood hinge pockets
I chased that water leak for months. The bottom of that pocket rusts out.
CRfromTexas made me open my eyes about the problem. I patched two rust holes that were not immediately apparent. Check there first.

The other typical leak is to find a spot under the battery tray with a rusted out hole in the firewall. I doubt the sun roof drains as they are unlikely to get crud that would block them unless the sun roof was left open for a long period of time. The rear foot well is lower than the front so it is almost certain the leak is at the front and flowing to the back.

open the sunroof, and look in the very front on each side. put a tablespoon of water in there, and then behind each front tire there is a drain hose, push some weed wacker line in there, and push out any debris from the area. keep putting water in until it flows smoothly. after you get it all cleaned out, take apart the sunroof, and remove the front air deflector assembly, and look in there really well with a flashlight, if you see rust, prepare for the worst.
