Overheating on a 1997 E300D
The radiator was replaced two years ago. However when stuck in traffic the gauge goes all the way up near the redline which concerns me since I am in Upstate NY and the weather is much hotter in Virginia. When I get going and drive at cruising speeds it quickly drops to normal levels. I topped off the radiator and it does not have any leaks. Thanks for any input

First thing I would check on one of these is the viscous fan clutch. When the coolant temp is over 82 or so and you rev the engine, you should hear the fan roar. They are known to lose their fluid over time, requiring replacement of the fan clutch.
Also check to make sure the fans in front of the radiator have not broken their belt. If you spin one, the other should spin.

Would know what is the next step in diagnosing this problem since my aux fans do not engage even at 100C degrees?

Unplug the fans and try putting 12V across them, to see if they spin up.

Sorry but could you tell me how I would do this? Not much of an electrician
