Mating OM603.971 with 722.508

Have been thinking about this for a while. I have heard mention of it on another forum but it wasn't in a W140, I think it was in a W124 IIRC. At any rate, besides the fact that it's electronic control I'd like to hear what people think about putting the 5 spd auto trans behind the 3.4L TD engine.

This thought comes about because of two things, first, my auto trans needs work and secondly, a 722.508 is available to me from a wreck that was running. The OM603 runs about 2500rpm at 65mph and I don't think it needs to work that hard at road speed. The change in gearbox would knock rpm's down about 25%.

Let me hear your thoughts

Steve A

If anyone else has any insight I'd love to hear it.

Thanks

It would be nice to hear more about this as you progress. Please keep us informed of what you find out.

Do it.

I've considered taller gears to run the freeway, or a stick, but I like the launch I have and like the automatic. A 5-speed with lockup would be nice.

Driving the coach I run 1625rpm at 75mph, that's what I'd like to see on the 124.

I read all 722.5s need a controller. They bypass fourth gear without a controller.

There's a fellow in the Seattle area who makes a standalone controller for a 722.6 behind earlier engines. I think Diesels as well.

That would be good if we could put a 722.5 behind an OM617.95x...

You might be right sixto. My info for the .502 being hydraulic came from another forum so I'm not sure about accuracy.

That would be interesting too. I wonder how difficult it would be to integrate the MB controller for the 722.508 into the 140.134 chassis? That might be more trouble than it's worth. Any info on the stand alone 722.6 controller? Does he have a website?

I would guess that it's just some solenoid... I would rig something up, with a switch or such on the the throttle linkage.

I've been contemplating this idea. But I wonder how to make it stronger for potential increase in power.

Ha! Only if it was that easy!

Actually a super pump there might be in the cards.
