Is there any way to check the W201 motor mounts?

Is there any way to check a W201 / W124 style motor mount when it is off the car to determine whether it is "good" or "bad"?

I have several that I have collected over the years. I just removed 2 from my 190D that I know were bad, and replaced them with 2 newer looking ones from a wrecked car. The vibration is greatly reduced now, so I feel good about the mounts that are now installed in the car.

However, I would like to be able to test some of the others to see if they are worth using or not.

there are two types, right?

the hydraulic and the rubber ones similar to the w123 mounts.

the rubber ones allow you make a pretty good guess visually.

The hydraulic ones I have a read a few different opinions on... such as measuring height or compressing them with a vice / C-clamp.

Yeah - I'm talking about the hydraulic ones.

On all of them, if I shake them, I can hear a slight rattling sound (like there's something loose inside). The ones that I removed were much more pronounced in this rattling. They sounded like there was a loose ball bearing inside.

when 124 ones go bad, the Hydo ones, they get really squished looking, think mushroom cap look, there's some pictures on here of them bad, also you may have a trans mount, mine was shot to pot and when they replaced it my motor no longer shakes

There's a gap to measure in the 124 style mounts. 13mm or more is good, less is worn. You can make a measuring tool out of cardboard.

Now that's good info, sixto.

I can't measure the "bad" ones in the installed position any more, but at least I have a way to judge the currently installed mounts.

Thanks guys.
