1985 mercedes turbo problems

i have a 1985 300sd turbo. The turbo has worked fine since I bought i 6 months ago but a week ago I started hearing a belt screeching type noise. I thought it was a loose belt. Now all of the sudden The turbo is not working. The car struggles to reach 55 mph. Can finally get to that speed after driving at 3000+ rpm then shifting hard. Need any advice I can get. I am unfamiliar with these cars and engines since its the first one Ive owned. Thanks a lot

That screech may have been the bearing/s seizing up. If it doesn't turn by hand, a rebuild or replacement is in order.

If yours has locked up, I see them often in the PnP yards in the $50 -$70 price range. Might want to also look at the turbo oil supply.

The fan inside the turbo spins freely, when engine is off. Is it still seized up?

Doesn't sound like a lockup. You might want to check play in the fan. There are several; threads on checking turbos

it could be a belt too. you may have a simple banjo bolt plugged up, and a loose belt on the alternator. the belt is screeching, and the banjo bolt is limiting the fuel for acceleration.

Thanks for the help. Replaced line from ALDA to banjo bolt. Banjo Bolt was 100% plugged. Cleaned that out, now she's running great. Still have screeching right before turbo kicks in?

screeching is commonly the alternator belt pair. you have to get CONTINENTAL matched set 10mm x 1000mm belts both have to come from the same lot or they will screech... have fun!
