1985 300td turbo compatibility

Hi all,

I was wondering which turbos I would be able to use on my 1985 300td, which is in need of one. I'm looking to find out what years/models are compatible. Thanks in advance for any replies.

you can use a turbo from any unmodified w123 chassis.

the two stock brands are KKK and Garrett. They are referred to as T3

Some have a strange appendage on the front; this is not an issue.

U.S. models are:
300d 300td 300cd 300sd... [someone fill in the blanks here]

The 81-85 300SD is a W126 rather than W123 but what jt20 said still applies.

Turbos rarely go bad. What makes you say you need one?

I found out that the ARV (the strange appendage on the front of some turbos) does make a difference, but only that it gets in the way of the air filter housing, and changes the length of the tube connecting the air filter housing to the turbo.

My engine died, and the replacement engine was a rebuilt 450k mile motor. The ARV equipped turbo was a spare from a who knows what mileage motor, but it had no felt play, versus the small amount on the turbo on the motor, and the large amount on the dying motor.

I dont know if the turbo from the CA '85 300D will fit the federal cars or vice versa. I've read that the CA turbo can be reclocked to fit the federal cars but i havent seen one being done yet.
