W124 603 Fan Clutch Bolt

So, I have the new radiator, fan clutch and 606 11 blade fan waiting to go in and have the old radiator out. What's the problem? I can't get the allen bolt out to remove the old fan clutch. It positively will not turn. My recollection is that it is not reverse-threaded. Is this correct? Any ideas?

I'm glad I didn't try this with the radiator still installed.

It is a standard bolt, it probably is secured into place with blue threadlock. Use a propane torch of something similar to heat the head of the bolt and thereby warm the bolt shaft softening the threadlock. Make certain that you have the Allen bolt's head clean and that the Allen wrench is fully seated when you apply force trying to remove it. Good luck!

how are you holding the pulley still? are you using a strap wrench or does your water pump have the rib to lock the pulley down.
either way, I got mine out with a good 8mm allen wrench. get the pulley locked down and pry on the allen.
standard thread. try soaking it in PB blaster or AEROKROIL

well, if the rad is coming out maybe you can get an air tool on it

it's amazing what you can spin off with impact versus slow brute torque, even without securing the fan you might be able to blast it out

..but get a good tool/part join before you pull the trigger on something so small

Thanks everyone. I even put a small cheater pipe on the allen key and put as much pressure as I dared. No luck. So, tonight I hit it with PB Blaster and I'll give it another go tomorrow. If that doesn't get it, I'll probably go the torch route.
Scott, the radiator is out, but I don't think I can get any kind of impact tool in there without pulling the A/C condenser. It's pretty tight in there.
I mainly wanted to make sure I was turning it the right direction. Thanks again.

I just finished changing the clutch in a customer's 91D it's soooo much easier with that 6th cylinder missing from the engine bay!
is there any chance you can hit the wrench with your palm instead of pulling/pushing on it with a cheater? I find that impacting forces work better than steady pressure. BE SURE the wrench is firmly seated in the bolt head!

Look out for interference with an 87 300D/TD and a 606 clutch/fan combo -

You can get an air ratchet which has a 90 degree bend at the head to get on that bolt.

GOODGOLLYMIZMOLLY that thing was in there tight!! It took the PB Blaster, a couple of minutes with a torch and all the strength I could muster on the 2 foot long pipe to budge it. I've removed plenty of lug nuts/bolts that weren't that tight. There was no evidence of any kind of threadlock on the bolt.
Thanks for all the replies
So, is blue thread lock recommended for reassembly?
