re-installing windshield aluminum trim, any tips or tricks?

I had my windshield replaced a few months back but did not have the trim re-installed as it was bent pretty bad. I now have some trim from a parts car that I need to install myself. I've searched for specific info about this but haven't found any how-to's.

Before I wing it, does anyone have any tips or tricks regarding the install of the front windshield trim?

thanks.

I think you have to put the trim into the gasket before putting the gasket around the glass. Someone who has done this job before will be able to chime in.

Unfortunately, I don't know that you're going to get the trim back on now. It is supposed to go in the rubber before you put it in the car. Maybe if you get a really hot day and use lots of soapy water you'll be able to get it in. But I'd guess that you're going to bend it all up in the process.

This is why I had my windshield replaced by a dealer, using OEM glass and an OEM gasket. Couldn't even tell the car was touched.

Ok, thanks for the feedback. Clearly the trim should have been done beforehand.

At this point I'm not going to have the windshield taken out again. Has anyone ever had experience getting the trim in after the windshield is in? And if so how did you do it?

your choices. remove the windshield and install it correctly or, try installing the trim now, beat up all of your trim, remove the windshield, buy new trim and gasket and install correctly. The trim is too flimsy to be manhandled and wont look right if you force it.

I do NOT recommend this EVER..

I know several people who (wrecked trim) used a grinder to remove one side of the retaining barb and/or reduce the width by half + dish soap 50/50 water + plastic trim tools, and lots of sweat equity..

Result:

* It gets bent/deformed refusing to seat/lock..

* It falls off driving down the road = junked trim.

* It pops out 2 - 3 times per year = dish soap 50/50 water + plastic trim tools, and lots of sweat equity..
