Hey everyone, well i've finally been driving the 220D on the road for a few days now. I think all the problems i'm going to have for awile have finally surfaced. If I could PLEASE get your opinions and information with each problem and if it's easy enough for a DIY or if I should take it in. Here it all is:
1.) I have a MASSIVE oil leak. As far as I can see the oil is dripping off the oil pan, but I can't find out where it's coming from, Oil is also leaking from the oil filler cap, bad gasket i'm guessing. It leaked so much that a week after my repair to get it running, it literally leaked out all its oil. My driveway is starting to look like a dalmation and I don't want to have to run to autozone for oil every other week lol ![]() 2.) I have the gorilla knob starter and pulling it to start works just fine, but if I push it in to stop the engine nothing happens, the mechanic told us the part had just gone bad, we have the new part, just need to put it on. The only way to turn the car off at the moment is to put it in gear and stall it. 3.) There is a hose starting at the brake reservoir going down to what I think is the clutch. The part of the hose connecting to the reservoir is all chewed up and I had to clamp it on using those screw clamps. It's holding but still leaking brake fluid. My clutch pedal was sticking to the floor when I first started driving around, but after adding that screw clamp. It hasn't done it since..... Could these be the reason? 4.) Glow plugs arn't working. Now i've replaced the glow plugs on my 240D but this looks different. It's the christmas light setup and should I buy the looped style GP's or the newer type? I REALLY want them changed because I know none of them are working, and when the engine is cold, it's such a dog to start ![]() 5.) When I brake, it rides to the left, but I imagine it's because we're running the spare tire (which is skinny) on the front left, when the other three are normal fat tires, could this be my problem? 6.) Also upon take off from first gear there is a thudding noise like the back is so low the tires are rubbing, but i'm 90% sure that's not the case. I'm thinking it might be the flex disc needing replacement but that's just a guess. Also it's making a noise while driving when there is weight in the back. Sounds like the muffler is rubbing, like the dinging/clacking type sound, but it sounds too familiar and I'm thinking the rear axles are on their way out but i'm assuming, heard the same noises with my 240D and it ended up needing new rear axles. The muffler is missing one rubber band twords the back of it. I'm hoping that's the culprit. Should I just take the car in for these? Or can I do some of these on my own? Once these are fixed, I won't have to worry about anything but registration, insurance and diesel fill ups lol. Thanks everyone I really appreciate it!

Until you buy one this site has an online manual http://mb.thatchermathias.com/ The biggest oil leal is most often from the Valve Cover Gasket; another thing to check is the Oil Cooler hoses. Hoewver, the best way to find a leak is to clean off/degrease the Engine and afterwards look for the leak. I believe you have a Manual shutoff lever in about the middle of your Valve Cover where the linkage is but I am not sure; check that online manual becaues the way you are shutting off the Engine could damage the rings. You Clutch has a hydraulic cylinder that takes Brake Fluid from the Master Cylinder. Replace the leaking hose becaue if the hoses burst you will not be able to release your clutch. It is up to you if you want to stick with the Loop style Glow Plugs or update to the Pencile type kit. Members who live in places where in Winter it gets severly cold seem to prefer the update. Again if you look at the online manual there is some troublshooting info on the Loop style glow plug system. Since you did not say you are having trouble starting the car I would concentrate on your other problems first. Make sure you Differential has enough OIl in it. The Flex discs can be inspected just by safely jacking up the car and looking at them.

To stop the engine, just push the lever on the IP where the cable is attached forward to full stop(that`s waht the cable actually does each time one pushes the knob). Do not hurry to change the Push/Pull starting mechanism-inspect the area where the cable connects to the IP body-have a look at this thread:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=240306&page=4 As Diesel911 said, clean the engineand inspect-the front and rear crank seal area, the oil filter area, the front face where the oil pressure relief valve is,the cap of the idler sprocket bearing bushing...gaskets... Upgrade to the pencil-type plugs(takes just the 4 plugs+home made wires -you do not need a relais: http://www.dieselgiant.com/mercedesdieselloopglowplugrepair.htm ...don`t forget to remove the grounding cable from plug #1 to the cyl.head... If you have the ballast resistor(thick wire coil)monted on the firewall,by-pass it...salt shaker too.. Voltage to your type of glow plugs: http://www.hehlhans.de/bilder/autos/g240/reihe.jpg You probably have air in the clutch system-bleeding is a bit tricky-lots of info on this forum-like this thread: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=215891 ...or the rubbers in the cyl.need replacing... Change all the fluids and filters with what the manufacturer recommends..change the oil in the IP too. I`d also overhaul the brake calipers and change all the brake hoses...pretty straight-forward...unless you have a stuck piston.. Similar to Porsche calipers: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_caliper_rebuild/911_caliper_rebuild.htm Here a beautifully restored /8: http://www.zeitlos-oldtimer.de/angebote_druck_detail.php?id=28 |
