op. temp
The operating temp. on my 79 SD is about 200 degrees. Is this acceptable? While searching posts on another subject, I saw mention of someone's operating temperature being around 100 degrees. Should I be addressing this?

A lot of us are speaking in Celcius degrees because that's what the gauge reads. Since 100C = 212F you are running OK.

Thanks Ken. My guage is a Farenheit. If it isn't, then I am running at about 425 degrees F!

Any reason why the change?
Greetings Bill,
Just wondering why the change seeing as a lot of us including myself were raised in the old school before was much considered or learned. I hate to have to carry a calculator around to find out hot hot my engine is or outside temp for that matter. Charles

My '80 SD reads in Celsius. Also I find that it runs hotter than my TD. My nieghbor also has a SD and his runs at the same temp as my SD. My father owns an '85 300D and his runs at the same temp as my 300TD. It seems the W123's don't really get above 80C, yet the SDs go above 100C. Things that make you go Hmmmmmm. BTW all the cars mentioned have Celsius markings.

The '84 300SD runs warmer than the 123
Greetings Rick,
Yea, I notice my '84 300SD runs maybe a tad bit warmer than the '80 300TD just thought it was the turbo adding heat somehow. Nothing drastic but it goes up to 100 C and then comes back down to around 85-90 in most cases. Never know though, it could be a sticking thermostat too. At this point heading into Winter I can use all the heat I can get in the mornings when temps have already dipped down to 9 degrees and the ole 300SD cranks right over on the first second and fires off. This car has definitely got me scratching my head and I Love it. They even have the wrong battery in it and it doesn't bother it one bit as far as starting. This beauty has some strong compression at 193,000 and going strong. Still running 15W-40 Delo 400 in her too. I might have to plug her in if it gets sub zero, but something tells me she'll still start right up without the warm up. Charles
