Question Need some help! 1978 300D 123130

I was calibrating the valves on my 1978 300D W123 this afternoon and found two valves Cylinder 3 and 4 (intake ans exhaust) that I couldn't adjust, any tips? is it possible that the valve guide needs to be replaced? Any help i really would appreciate! Thanks guys!

I've read on here that if the entire valve rotates with the adjustment nuts that you need to lightly hold the valve stem so you can adjust them if thats your problem

Make sure you aren't spinning the valve when you turn the adjusting nut.

Welcome to the forum - you can buy / rent a set of three spanners for this job. They are often referred to as Hazet spanners (as they are one of the manufacturers who make them). You have two 14mm spanners for the nuts that actually adjust the valve and a larger one (sorry forgotten the size) to hold the bit above the valve spring.

Make sure you use some proper spanners - or some normal spanners that have been bent. Don't be tempted to use normal straight spanners - there is a chance that you will damage something.

How big a chance this is I don't know - it depends on the user. HOWEVER I'm pretty sure the damage done to my engine was done by a monkey with straight spanners. Have a look at this:-

Keep on flicking through until you see the snapped valve guide. If this happens a new guide needs to be fitted and then the valve and valve seat needs to be cut to fit - and then lapped - as well as the guide being reamed to size...

...Oh and I forgot to say you can still adjust a valve clearance with a broken guide - so your problem is unlikely to be that.

I just jam a screwdriver into the spring, and it keeps it from turning enough for me to get the nut out of the way.
