81 300d a/c belt adjustment

Belt is very loose, but have not been sucessful in figuring out the bolts to loosen & adjust. Any help appreciated.

The adjustments are at the A/C compressor.

looking at the compressor from the rear (It is located under the car on the Left front of the engine) there are 3 large bolts facing towards the rear. loosen these.
You might get to 2 of them from the top.

The adjuster bolt can be seen from the top. It sits next to the oil cooler lines where they are clamped to the A/C mount.

Tighten down on the nut to tighten the belts.

Then tighten the three large bolts and you are done.

keep in mind, that if the compressor is on it's way out, it'll stretch the belt during operation, and need constant adjustment, then it'll snap the belt.

Some pics here: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=281663&highlight=compressor post #4 you can see the three Charlie is talking about. On the left side of the pic in that post you can see the eyelet part of the banjo bolt that adjusts the tension.

Check for interference with your oil cooler line. I found that they were close enough to limit swing travel of the compressor.
