Front wheel bearings, does it matter if

I took the wheel bearings out of both left and right sides and cleaned them, they are in good condition but I don't know from which side they were installed. Does it matter if I put what was on the left side of the car now on the right side? Getting new seals for the inner sets.

Also, what type of grease is recommended? The stuff that was in there was a bright green color, that's all I know about it.

Probably not what you want to hear, but yes it does matter. The bearings are interchangeable when new, but yours will have worn in to match the races they were installed with.

Look for any wear marks on the bearings that match up with marks in the same position on the Bearing Race.
I just use Wheel Bearing Grease rated for Disc Brakes.

Someone recently posted a thread on Mercedes apporoved Fluids; maybe grease is there.

Yep, it does matter which ones go back where. But look on the bright side, you have a 50/50 chance of getting it right.

If the bearings are in reasonable shape, I'd chance it and put them in again. Drive a little, the jack each side side up and check for play/noise and adjust as req'd.

I thought about the 50/50 chance... inner and outer bearings 50/50

So, I will call a shop that replaced the right side 2 years ago, because, I see Bower on both inner and outer on one pair. I have a feeling they are from the drivers side. I think the shop replaced only the outer bearing 2 years ago. So depending on what they say I will either use what I have or purchase 2 new sets of bearings.

If they are different brands from one side to the other, then that makes it simpler. On the other hand bearings are pretty cheap. What's worth more, the time to do them possibly 2x if they are no good or the cost of new bearings. If you have spare time, then take a chance, if not go for new. Your call........

If you are going to put new ones in, dont get cheap ones !!
You should be able to match the cup & cones by the numbers on them especially if there has been replacement in the past. You must have matching cones & cups as there are many variations in bearings for any given shaft & hub sizes. The roller angle is the biggest concern.

Not what you want to hear, but I always go with new bearings. 30 years ago I used to re-pack them, but not in 2010. But that's just me.

Timken is what I would buy if I were worried about getting the best.

I would probably just drive it and have a new set on hand in case of trouble. Wheel bearings don't tend to go out suddenly but cause symptoms gradually.

It isn't that bright. Triacon has only a one in four chance of getting all the bearings back in the right place.

That is nice to hear. I get a little tired by almost everything I purchase being of off shore manufacture. In too many items there is just no alternative now.

I have taken another route with Shoes. I have Arthritis and some Shoes cause more pain than others.
I got tired of paying for new Shoes only to find that even after they are brkoen it the still hurt my Knees too much.
For the last 3 years I have been getting them at 2nd hand stores when I can find some decent ones and sometimes they even have new ones.
That way if I have to get rid of a pair because they hurt my Knees it is not so much of a waste of money.
Although that was not my main intent the used ones are bought and sold here the $s remain here in our country. I guess I could also say I am recycling them.
