So is my alternator dead?

Driving today to work in my 1987 300D the red battery light came on, coming from work car still started fine but on the way home ABS light came on and radio died. The lights became dim...when I got home I could not start the car already. Belt seems to be fine but the alternator is soaked in oil from the rubber turbo boot-blow by.
Before I order the alternator anything else to consider?
Thanks!

Just got underneath the car cleaned the plug in connectors, started up, same deal- red battery light, when RPM go up the red battery light dims.
