So is my alternator dead?

Driving today to work in my 1987 300D the red battery light came on, coming from work car still started fine but on the way home ABS light came on and radio died. The lights became dim...when I got home I could not start the car already. Belt seems to be fine but the alternator is soaked in oil from the rubber turbo boot-blow by.
Before I order the alternator anything else to consider?
Thanks!

Just got underneath the car cleaned the plug in connectors, started up, same deal- red battery light, when RPM go up the red battery light dims.

You need to fix the oil leak first !!
It may be that the oil has got on the brushes & stopped contact. It may be that the oil has killed a couple of diodes or the voltage reg.
If the oil leak is that bad you may just destroy a new alt in a short time.

Might try a regulator first.

try a new voltage regulator before you condemn the alternator. They can be had fairly cheap if you shop around and it won't take more than five minutes to install.

Thanks guys, just fixed the problem..took out the regulator it was covered in gunk, cleaned it with carb cleaner. The brushes were almost non existant, I polished them with some steel wool and cleaned contacts. Put it back in and my charging problem is fixed! I have a new voltage regulator on order now.

Always good to hear when it is a simple fix.
