Wiring Harness and Audio Upgrade

When I got my 1992 300D in 2003, I replaced the Becker unit with a CD player. Not sure what exactly was done with the wiring, but I know my fader doesn't work and I know the bass units in the door had to be disconnected.

Well, that CD player needs to be replaced. Plus the speakers could use replacing.

To the best of my knowledge, the wiring harness has never been replaced, and I know that's something that needs to be done eventually. Is there a logical order in which these things should be done? Should I do whatever I want to do audio-wise, and then cross the wiring harness bridge when needed? Or should I deal with the wiring harness preemptively?

I don't know much about the wiring issues involved....just want to make sure someone doesn't screw up my car.

Thanks.
