belt tensioner shock really required?

my tensioner shock absorber bushings have been worn out for a while. Today the upper mounting bolt fell out and the shock fell into the fan. Is the shock really required? will the belts fly off or something? BTW, I can't believe how much noise that shock was making at an idle. Sooooo much quieter!

Without a damper, you increase vibrations along the entire belt. The belt is like a big rubberband.

Every time you add a load to it (turning, flipping on the headlights) you risk increased vibrations.

I wouldn't be too concerned driving without it on a beater, just keep some tools handy so you could put the belt back on. It would probably be a rare occasion.

However, the tensioner and the belt will wear out much faster.
