Which glow plugs??

Glow plugs didn't work this morning, and I can find no record of them being replaced in what passes for the PO's service records. Figure that regardless what the problem is, I may as well replace them.
Checked Fastlane and Allparts and got completely different options and prices... What glow plugs are OEM for an 83SD? What is the difference between Fastlane and Allparts anyway? Seems like the same people...

If the glowplugs didn't work at all, it's unlikely they all failed at once. Did you check the strip fuse?

Kerry,
How many glow plugs have to be out for the car to have starting problems in 40 degree weather? Do you have any idea?

1 out would make a miss on starting. Don't know how many would have to be out to cause it to fail to start. I know 1 out has stopped mine from starting at 5 degrees.

Haven't had a chance to check anything, been at work all day.... Strip fuse is my guess, as the dash light did not come on, and there was no obvious electrical drain. Warm enough that the vehicle started without issue, but winter is coming, and replacing the glow plugs now seemed like a good idea, even if they are not the immediate problem.

Do a glow plug search and you'll quickly conclude that you should use Bosch or Behru. I don't know about your SD but my 83 300D came with Behru's. I'm still using the originals but it does run a bit rough when first started. Maybe I'm due (or overdue) for new ones.

Thanks Charles. Being that they are all close in price, and not expensive either... I was leaning toward the Behru's, as they are highest priced.

1 bad plug made a HUGE difference on my car. I used Bosch, and both the old and new ones were made in France... I thought Bosch was German...

The Bosch Glow Plugs are entirely adequate, easier to find and cost less than the Beru Glow Plugs.
With either one you should ream the Carbon out of the Glow Plug Holes (there is a tool for that) or find alternative method to clean them.

Well, determined it to be a failure of the harness. Going to pull the one from my parts car and rehab it, then put in new plugs with the new harness.

Any takers on what the difference is between allparts and fastlane?

Haven't heard of a harness failure before. Where and how did it fail?

Measured impedance from glow plugs to ground, then again through the harness. Plug #3 reads right at 1 ohm by itself, 25 ohms through the harness. Same readings with new/used glow plug from parts car.

Problem reared up after normal use, no abnormal conditions. Further testing will be done when I can get the harness out.
