Sharp noise sometimes under hard pull / big hill

82' 300TD, 346k Recent valve adjust, reman injectors, glow plugs, diesel purge, etc etc.

She finally seems to have quit the idle lope and smoke, after today's purge and rack dampener adjustment - life is good!

However, on my all-out test drive this afternoon, i noticed a phenomena; one I have noticed before. 60mph, started up a fair hill, and slowly depressed the accelerator to the floor (but not though kick-down).

The engine was holding it's own fine, when suddenly, it started a, how should I describe it... metallic growl. As if the typical rattle of the diesel engine suddenly got 2.5 times as pronounced.

Maybe nailing? It stopped as soon as I let the pedal up a ways. I've heard this engine do that before, and all sorts of tuneup type work hasn't changed it.

It has only shown up a couple of times, and only under full load - after (?) 15 to 25 seconds (at full load).

Anybody else's 617 do this?

Probably cause?

...sounds almost like a piston is slapping the head...

Does this happen at a particular rev range?

Lets see - at 60 in 4th, prob around 2800ish...

or maybe it sounds sort of like you might think if the oil pressure dropped... But I don't think that's it...

Difficult to tell but at a guess - and only a guess so don't panic! - big end bearings? Can you repeat the sound at idle - rather than under load?

I have only heard it a couple times, and only under full load - sustained engine speed - climbing a hill - not accelerating. It's not subtle - it's quite noticeable.

Can you make a recording of this sound? This might seem like a lot of trouble but it could help you reach a correct diagnosis in record time!

If not, on warm engine - so after at least 20 minutes of driving - rev the engine at stand still to see if you can reproduce the problem. You say it is noticeable - I think you should be able to hear something going wrong.

I'm glad someone else has jumped in to help - but I don't get the connection with the rain though - unless your driving style changes:- "Must get home I hate the rain" perhaps?
