I looked at an 81SD

The guy has it running in WVO filtered to 5 microns. He installed a greasecar 2 tank system. Car ran well on dino but engine shook a little when he switched over. Would be a nice car but too high = $3200 but had cracked dash, palomino leather front seats need to be reworked but are comfortable. Said Compressor is new along with a few more AC parts. Ac not working but heat is. Asking $3200. I'll let it sit & see if the price changes.

The car ran well & looked good. I think I can pull the grease kit & be fine. I don't have time to filter fuel or spend time learning.

I also talked to a tow yard owner about buying some MBZs or diesel Rams before he hauls them to the junkyard. He said I could have anything for what he'd get at the yard. Sounds like a deal.

I'd not pay more than $1000 for one even in beautiful shape if it had been run on grease, as I'd consider it in need of an engine replacement upon purchase.

I'll make that point when I make my offer. There are some ugly vids on youtube. Is there a proven correct way to run WVO?

the problem with buying a car run on wvo is that you will never know how well his oil was cleaned and dewatered .also how well did he purge the before shutting down to clear veg from system.too many variables that could lead to premature wear and coking.i wouldnt do it,certainly not for that price.i run wvo in my sdl and have first hand experience about problems.

Price is way too high. Could not get near that for mine and it runs perfectly; everything works but the sunroof. Original owner too. 255K miles. Not selling mine but keep us posted for how much it really sells for. Current pic of mine attached.

I spent a lot of time on the WVO forums a couple of years ago, put together my own kit to do my SD, then promptly toasted the motor before I could install it. But during that time I read everything pro or con I could muster up on the subject. So you can give credence to my views, or not....

My take: A Greasecar system is at best a minimum standard for WVO, and in my opinion is not adequate out of the box. I would not touch a car that has been run without injection line heaters and I would vastly prefer one with in-tank heating and a low-pressure electric pump delivering the WVO forward without relying on the lift pump to suck it through the lines.

I am assuming it's got a spiral heat exchanger and IMHO those are simply alone not enough to boost pre-injection temps high enough to minimize chances of ring coking.

The fact it runs less well when switched to WVO is not a good sign. My understanding has always been that the switch should at worst be imperceptible. Many greasers claim their Mercedes actually idle smoother when switched over.

The only way he will get the money he wants is if he catches some wide-eyed bright young thing who just spent the weekend reading about the miracle of "free fuel" somewhere on the Net....

It's a shame that so many of the SD's get molested with a veggie kit. Just from browsing through Craigslist in the S.F./Bay Area, I'd say that at least 1 out of every 3 have been converted to run grease. Maybe the big trunk and the idea of running a luxury automobile cheap is the appeal.

Would taking it off grease clear things out or should I consider the engine trashed & move on at any price?

If it still runs/starts ok on diesel I'd go for it, but only at a very low price. That way if the engine dies early from the grease experiences you can afford to swap it out. And the car itself would have to be pretty exceptional.

I would buy yours for that if the paint is original or a very nice respray (which it appears!) and the interior is at least presentable.

Quality SDs are difficult to find. Mine looks awful but everything works and has been replaced for the most part mechanically, minus the LR window (open wire only when door is shut, when open the window works ). I say my bad paint is my anti theft system.
