Question Anyone ever make the socket for 617/616 injector lines?

Like this one:
http://www.toolsource.com/diesel-injection-line-17mm-crowfoot-mercedes-p-114820.html

I was thinking a deep-well 17mm socket could be modified. Im sick of messing around with tilted wrenches and crows-feet in the area. Id also like to be able to torque the lines to spec to prevent damage.

Or, has anyone seen it for less than $125?

They do appear on Ebay periodically for a lot less

I have one of the wrenches and it is nice to use but I never would have bought one by itself. It happened that I got it with a bunch of tools in one Lot on eBay. While it is a nice toot to use it is also not a strong tool.

Back in the 1970s I broke the one supplied by the shop were I worked trying to break loose some very stuck Hard Line Nuts. Because, that one broke is one of the reasons I have never bought one and used a Crowsfoot or a Flare Nut Wrench.
When I use mine I watch the Jaws if the start to spread more than I think is good for the tool I use my Crows Foot or a Flare Nut Wrench to loosen the Line Nut.

But, there is a compromise tool. Snap-on sells a 17mm crowsfoot type Valve Adjusting Wrench the frequently comes up on eBay (see thumbnail).

I believe I have 2 of those Snap-on ones from that Lot of Tools I bought but I have not looked at them for 2 years and cannot be sure they are 17mm.

Anyway, there is one on eBay Right now.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SNAP-ON-S6014-17MM-VALVE-ADJUSTMENT-WRENCH-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2eb1a6767fQQitemZ200548972159QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools

An improvement of what you have now might also be to get a SK Tool or Snap-on Flare Nut Crows Foot. While both are 6 sided the advantage of them is that they are a almost 1/2" thick.

I bought a Snap-on one from eBay a month ago but have not had a chance to use it. But, that is what I plan to use if it looks like one of the Nuts is going to be stuck (like when pulling Injectors at the Junk Yard).
I definately do not want to crack my expensive Hazet Line Wrench.

With a mig welder ,a cut off grinder and the proper handtools to sacrifice, one can easily make this tool for almost nothing. I've been using mine for years and I probably have about $2.00 in it.

The Hazet 4550 is a 17mm with a 3/8" drive (the one that I have).
The Hazet 4550-1 is a 17mm with a 1/2" drive
This place http://chadstoolbox.com/hazet.aspx sells the above for $80.84 + shipping.

The Hazet 4550 is a 17mm with a 3/8" drive ASM-H4550 $72.61
http://www.ntxtools.com/network-tool-warehouse/ASM-H4550-p-ASM13.html

Use the part number for the tool and do some searches; could be there are places selling for less than the above.

There is also a 4550-2 but I have not found info on what sizes it is.

I have this tool! It's been used many hundreds of times! You’re not going to bend or break this one on any flair nuts! There is also have a 14 mm version for later 60X applications

Snap-on FRXM17 $64.50 list price

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?item_ID=2134&group_ID=263

If you started with a high quality socket and you used a grinder without overheating things as you modified it, you could probably end up with something very close with less cash outlay! Good Luck!

That would be good for the idle adjustment bolt lock nut on 617s also.

edit: Nevermind, it is 14mm...Doh!

I have the Hazet 4550-1, 17mm 1/2 in drive. I got it in a e-bay purchase of a bunch of MB tools. paid $58 for this injector line wrench, valve adj wrenches, wrench for the diff plug/oil pan plug and a couple others.

the 4550-2 is a 19mm wrench.

I agree the hazet fuel line wrench is weak. first time I used it, it spread open, so I bought a set of flair nut crows foot wrenches. I use the crows foot to loosen the nuts, then use the hazet with a 6in extention to spin the nut off a little quicker. I bought the set of flair nut crows foot at a local auto supply for $17.

Does this mean that is the price for one, or for three? Is it a set?

Charlie
It is for one tool. The 4500 and 4500-1 were listed as the same price.
At chadstoolbox do a search Hazet 4500 or Hazet 4550-1 and you will get the price for one wrench.

The SK and Snap-on Flare nut Crowsfoot Wrenches look like the above set (I also have a similar set) but they are thicker; about 1/2 inch thick.

The Snap-on one I have also fits better on the end of the Extension that the cheapie set. With the cheapie set if you catch the Crowfoot on something it often comes off of the extension.

That can be a pain if it falls someplace where it is hard to get at.

Thanks for the replies!

I'll have to see if I can find the Hazet wrenches in an ebay/CL type situation.

Until then, I'll go with the crows foot flare nut wrenches as suggested by roy and charmalu. I should get a set anyways.

As I look at the prospect of owning these cars long term, it makes total sense to begin making/buying/sourcing the right tools. The ones I already have are invaluable.

I've been watching from the shadows - scary bloke that I am - and I think the out come is probably what I'll do - crow's feet (is it feet? it should be a plural of foot!) are for me too, but not necessarily for the job stated - I'll probably stick with a normal wrench until I bust something!
