That's a lot of miles on a car. I'm not aware of any transmission problems that '99 300 ETDs have.

RUST!

Particularly the front suspension spring-mounts on the chassis....

Give ANY rusty cars a wide birth!

There were issues on the paints these cars had which allegedly caused severe corrosion UNDER the sealers and underseals, so cannot easily be seen before its too late....

I scrapped a '98 car and it was an utter rust-heap underside....

i would look at the maintence records under a microscope....given the milage your probably gonna have alot of rubber suspension parts that should have been replaced..or will need to be replaced in the near future...same goes with engine mounts (but the mounts arent that big of a problem). i bought my 99 with 205k miles and given the levels of care the previous owner gave it i didnt think twice about the miles. it still needs constant upkeep (just because its a mercedes diesel) but runs and drives like new.

Rust is the main issue. Run your finger around the wheel arches, and peel back the top piece of rubber trim from the door edge. The top spring perches can also rust through, although this isn't a safety issue and I've never heard of one collapsing while being driven. Repair is a new cup riveted to the body.

The engines are rock solid. It may need new o-rings around the fuel lines at the fuel pump, and also new delivery seals on the top of the pump, they're both cheap jobs and DIY-able (there are guides on the forum). The injectors should be ok, if there's any clattering or nailing it may be a mix of injectors, or slightly worn valves.

The transmission fluid should be checked, if its dark brown or black it needs changing. Another easy DIY job. Other than that, these cars are inherently reliable, its just the rust that lets them down.

I'm surprised at the price, my 1997 turbo is on 249,500 and in the UK is worth £1,000 at the absolute most.

For that price, I don't think you can beat it, to be honest with you.

Now that there are some years under it's belt, I believe it to be the best diesel engine MB had built to that date. A super, hi-performance engine. They got it very, very right.
