190D tranny?

I have been slowly rebuilding my 84 190D, the car has been sitting for about 9 months. Is there something I should be doing to the tranny while it has been sitting that long? I just dont want to get the motor rebuilt and put back in and then the tranny to not do its job. I plan on draining fluid and replacing filter before it goes back on the road.

Replace whatever seals you can find on the exterior, especially the dipstick flange.

Test the modulator to see if it holds vacuum, replace the cap on principle.

inspect the B2 piston for wear or scoring..... almost $150 to replace when it brakes and an incredible pain to replace in the car.

If the shifting was questionable before, install the complete Superior shift kit..... its about $60 max.

Good Luck

I ordered alot of parts and I have a transmission input seal, where on the transmission does it go? Is that the front seal? If so how do I get to it? It looks like the front seal on the timing cover.

Its on the front pump behind the torque converter. You can pull it with a slide hammer and a hook without removing the pump from the trans.

What kind of hook? How do you remove the torque converter? Just pull it off? Thankyou.

I bought a flat hook from the Snap-On guy.
The tc will simply slide off of the input shaft once the trans is out. Be very careful putting the tc back on the trans or you will break the drive tangs off in the pump.

the torque converter needs to engage all three sets of teeth. so when you are putting it back on, keep it as square with the shaft as possible, push in until it stops, then turn it one direction while pushing in until it clunks into place, then turn it the other direction until it clunks again, then turn it back the first direction again until either it clunks again, or you are satisfied it cannot go in any further.
if you just put it in, and bolt the motor back together, when you start the car, the tc will shear off the pump fingers... and you'll have to take it back apart.

Got a seal puller today for $10.00 and pulled the front seal from the tranny today, put new front seal in. That was easier than I thought.
