Back with 83 240d not starting

Still no luck in getting the car started. I disconnected supply line from pre-filter with no fuel coming out of this gravity feed line. I purchased new primer-pump, still no fuel coming to pre-filter. I drained tank of fuel, cleaned fuel strainer best I could and cleaned tank best I could with the tank still in place. I was able to blow through fuel supply line by mouth. On thing I have not done is connect the return line to the pre-filter and see if the pre-filter fills up with fuel. If this does happen what does it mean? And if the pre-filter does not fill up with fuel what does that mean? I sure would like to get this car started.

Have you tried using a bottle of diesel in the engine compartment fed to the fuel filter?

um... you've done all that and no mention of checking fuel pressure in between lift pump and injection pump?

gallon juice jugs are GREAT for this.

with the rear of the vehicle raised above the front, fuel should spill from both lines.
I'd hook the primary to the return line, and PUMP AND PUMP AND PUMP!!!! with the out banjo bolt loose on the secondary filter base. then once you get the car running off the return line, it'll blow junk out of the tank screen.
keep the fuel level above 1/2 tank, or you risk running out of fuel, because the return line sits about 4" above the bottom of the tank.

so, hook the return line into the pre-filter? and the primary to where the retune line was connected? Is that correct?

Get a 2 litre soda bottle, milk jug, juice bottle etc, fill it with diesel, get a lenght of 5/16 fuel hose and run it from the jug to the pre-filter. You will have bypassed the fuel system upstream from the pre-filter and have a supply of diesel going directly to the pre-filter(primary filter).

just swap the two soft lines where they connect to the metal lines heading back towards the fuel tank.
