Funny Starting
I would like to solicit anyones assitance to troublshoot a problem.
I have a 1984 300SD. In the morning when I start the car, it runs on one click and without hesitation. Power and Pick-up is great. However, after I drive to work and shut off the engine when I re-start it, the engine exhibits loss of power and pick-up. The engine starts but when you step on the accelerator there is no response. When you put the transmission on drive, then engine dies. If I turn off the engine and park for 60 minutes, when I re-start the car is it is again one click and and the engine again has the pick-up and power. Sometimes, when I need to travel right after arriving at the office, I need to start and turn-off the engine 4 times to get the usual power and pick-up. I have brought the car to several shops but none of the mechanics can give me an idea where they will begin to troubleshoot the problem. I didn't want to leave the car and let them expriment with the problem and make even more problems. Nothing else is wrong with the car, temp is okay and it doesnt burn oil or show a lot of smoke when I step on the accelerator. I hope you someone can give me an idea where to start troubleshooting this "starting" problem. Thank You. Jojo123 Manial, Philippines |

Sounds like you have algae in the fuel tank, partially clogging the tank screen.
When it sits for a while, you have plenty of fuel, but if you try to start after running, the line is plugged and you don't have enough suction to pull sufficient fuel through the dirt. You may also have a leaking fuel line on the suction side -- this will leak back down into the tank, leaving the line full of air instead of fuel. If you park on a steep slope, front end down, the fuel will leak out of the hose and you will be able to see it. A leaking fuel line usually causes cold start problems, too, but in Manilla, you never have cold start problems -- doesn't get cold enough! Hope this helps! Peter

It might be something wrong with the engine shut off gizmo on the rear of the injection pump. There should be a brown vacuum line going to it. When the engine isn't running good, pull off the vacuum line to see if it makes any difference. If there is vacuum in the brown line when the engine is running, the problem might me in the key switch.

PEH is right about that. my 300SD had a similiar problem 2 years ago. It was the little valve in the ignition. The other way around is to turn the key off and back on quickly. if the engine doesn't shut off, give it some gas to see if the problem continue. Otherwise, turn the key on and off a couple before you start it again.
