A long bolt completely loose and engine whine?!
Hey everyone! I just got back from a 500 mile road trip in my 240D with not so much as a hiccup. I was fiddling around with it today and got under the hood and pulled the accelerator mechanism (the thing with the 'stop'), and heard it whine when it hit a high RPM (???), then looked down by the canister fuel filter and saw a long bolt + washer hanging out completely loose!
Pics below. I'm dying to know what happened and what that is??? Also any idea about the whine? |

looks like a mount bolt. maybe for a/c compressor bracket or fuel filter boss bracket...

OK so I shouldn't worry too much and just screw it back in? I should probably take it to a mechanic to get completely checked out for loose things...

Thats just a mounting bolt for the fuel filter assembly.
Its not really a good idea to bring diesles up to high rpm under no load.....its needless wear and tear and not good for the engine. The whine most likely is from an accessory like the Power steering pump (check the fluid level!) or the alternator....

caramel,
You need to get yourself a work shop manual & have a good read. It will give you a good back ground as to the location of things. If you put your location in your signature you may find there are members near you that would be happy to have you look over their shoulder when they are working on their car & explain what they are doing. Good luck with your car !!!!

knackered engine mounts and bits of the engine vibrating themselves loose goes hand in hand.. hence my comment |
