722 Transmission downshift
Greetings,
I have a 1990 300D 2.5L Turbo with the standard 722 4-speed transmission. If I am traveling at a low RPM in a gear I can downshift the transmission by fully depressing the pedal until I hit the kick-down switch. But I can also get the transmission to downshift by quickly depressing the pedal a couple of inches. Some combination of Bowden cable position and vacuum information is interpreted by the tranny as an indicator to doenshift. I currently need to depress the pedal quite far to cause it to downshift. In other similar diesels I have driven I do not need to press the pedal as far or as fast. I believe I can adjust my Bowden cable to make my car downshift more easily but I am not certain if I want to shorten or lengthen the cable to make it easier to downshift. I appreciate the help. |

You would shorten the cable. However this would also cause it to shift later. How do you adjust it on the 60x anyways?

Thanks. There is a detailed procedure for setting all of the linkages in the FSM. To just set the BC you loosen the set screw, adjust, tighten. |

I've set my bowden cable by feel and preference. The only thing that I see as important is that the bowden cable is slack with the throttle in the idle position.
Shortening the cable (by adjustment of course) will make it downshift quicker and upshift later.

------------ I shortened the cable about 1 to 2 mm. That was the change I needed and am happier with the performance of the car. Thanks again for your help. Last edited by sjh; 01-28-2011 at 07:07 PM. |
