1981 240d OM616 Injection Pump Timing Is Off?

I have been having trouble with my 240d not starting at all. I got the car from a friend who had the engine recently rebuilt and not starting.

I tried to perform the drip tube adjustment and I reached an interesting conclusion.

I set the crank to 26* BTC and pumped the hand pump. Nothing was coming out of Injector Line #1. I verified that the cam lobes were pointing up and they were.

And then I turned the crank one more time to 26* next stroke and pumped the primer pump and fuel squirted out.

So is my injection pump installed incorrectly? How do I go about removing it and installing it again?

It sounds like it's out of time.

You may be 180 degrees off on the timing of the injector pump....make sure the engine is on the compression stroke...

I know because I made this mistake after a rebuild of my 240D...remove the pump, move the engine to the compression stroke and re-mount the pump...and have fun!

It does sound like it is off 180 degrees. Who rebuilt the engine and installed the injection pump?

Yep, I have done it also on few Fuel Injection Pumps and a few more Ignition Distributors.
You get in a hurry or distracted by something and do not pay attention to what you are doing.

I put a distributor into my 6 cylinder chevy pickup truck once... and it would start and idle...
that was very bad that it started.. prolonged finding that it was 180 degrees off by several hours... much better if it had not started at all... basic things can really mess you up fast.... LOL
