Injector return line fell off....(1985 300D)
Was driving down the road and greeted with the strong stench of diesel, pulled over at an O'reileys and they had some fuel line which I threw on there. Does this happen often? The old line is supple and was replaced 2 months ago. What can I do to prevent it and what do I need to order?
Here is how I have it set up until I fix it: |

It's possible... Check the other ones as well. replace it with OE stock. inspect the nipples make sure none of them are marred.

Is this the line that I need (Looping Return Line)? Is that by the meter? |

You may be putting it on in such a way that the throttle linkages are pushing it off as you press the pedal. Or the piece of line that was cut is too short
In the picture, it is set up incorrectly. There is a clip on the bottom of the linkage arm, run the line through there. |

Yea I didn't know how to put it back on so I just got a long hose and threw it on, is there a DIY on how to do these so I can visualize this?

Put it on the nipple then turn the hose down towards the ground then bend it either forward or back parallel to the ground depending on which injector you start with. You will see a couple of little ears to grip it under the linkage. Once gripped in those ears, bend it back up towards the sky and down onto the other nipple.
It most likely was not pushed far enough down on to the nipple since this particular hose is more awkward to install than the others.

Thanks for the tip! Yea you are telling me its hard to get on, engine was pretty hot and slippery haha.
I was driving down the road with my roommate yelling at him for getting in my car smelling like fuel, praying that I didn't have a leak, glad it was something so easy. Is that above hose the correct hose? |

No, it should resemble the rest of the hoses. Not a rubber, but a fabric exterior. It's available on the buy parts link at the top of this page or at MB or VW dealers as injector return line hose.

It's the right stufff but when you click on the 'buy by the meter' link, it shows it as not available. The part number you show is for each little short piece by itself. Not sure that's long enough for your application. Better to buy by the meter in my opinion.

When I tried a Hose from the Auto Parts Store it lasted 2 weaks and the Fuel ate through it. If you want what might be a local source NAPA sells the real Return Line Hose as does the VW Dealer for the Old VW Rabbit Diesels.
From my Notes: Where to buy fuel return hose VW RAbbit http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=238219&highlight=Rabbit The Thread with the part numbers http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=210922&highlight=return+line+part+number

Once you finally get the real stuff, dip the end in oil before you put it on the injector, this helps it slip on.
