1985 300SD engine noise

For awhile now I kept hearing a ticking noise like a lifter.. Some days I can hear it and some days the engine ran quite. Today got louder and the engine lose power and not drivable.

I have not check around yet. Can the top half of these engine be rebuilt like doing a valve job on a standard pushrod engine?

Any suggestion where to start or what to start taking apart to narrow it down to what failed? Thank you in advance.

when was the last time valves were adjusted on your engine?

these motors have solid lifters so to speak... they must be adjusted about every 15thousand miles. the clearances should be on a black sticker on your radiator support brace near the driver's headlight.

What is the oil pressure when you hear the noise?

I adjusted the valves 5k miles ago, during the adjustment most of the valves were good. The oil pressure was on the "3".

This would not explain the loss of power, but sometimes the cruise control on my 85TD clicks. It sounds something like dry hydraulic lifters when it does it. I found the source of the noise by opening the hood, revving the engine and finally putting my hand on the cruise control actuator box. I could feel it making the noise.

I've been getting a similar ticking noise. although it's only while accelerating. She purrs like a jungle cat at an idle and runs fine when its still fairly cool, but starts ticking after reaching operating temp. I adjusted the valves < 2k ago. Not sure if it could be the IP needs adjusted or possibly an exhaust leak.

Thanks in advance guys, ET3

With so much about vacuum pumps listed lately, it may pay to put a stethoscope on yours and see if thats where the noise is. If so, rebuild/replace before it takes out your timing chain....$$$$
