OM 617 Timing Chain Guide Rail Help

I have begun to remove the head of my newest acquisition and have run into a puzzle. I referred to the manual for the timing chain guide rail (on the driver side of the head at the highest point of all guides) and am having a hard time trying to figure out how to get the pin out. I see there is a special puller, but I am unsure how to use it and if there is a way to get it out w/o the tool. Could someone please elaborate? I need to remove the turbo and then the timing gear to get the head loose from the chain. The hell of this is that there is very little stretch. I am pulling this because cyl. 3 crapped out on me and I am doing some investigative work to see why there is a misfire and a TON of blowby.
