OM603...how to diagnose pulley whine?

Hello all,

1987 300tdt with a whine/chirping at idle. Sounds like an idler pulley type whine, but I'm not quite sure how to diagnose and isolate. I'm hoping to not just throw money at this problem and actually only buy the part that needs replacing (what a concept). Serpentine belt is new (last few months). Noise goes away after RPMs rise.

Best bet to buy a mechanic's stethescope and have at it? None of the pulleys *seem* loose/sloppy and there is no unusual serp belt wear.

Where do I start?

thanks in advance,

seth

Yeah , Youse Gots the Idea.

Although,I'd wanna Physically verify with my hands(AND engine and Belt OFF)
A Noisy Pulley will be out of Kilter and Feel "Funny".If looking down on the
Belt area you can get any Fore/Aft action (Wobble)of the Pulley It's BAD.

ALSO,Belt "Shock Absorber" and Spring!
[His Mogness says the Shock should be nice and stiff,If it's easy to compress/
Expand it's Worn out.]

Unsolicited:State of the Motor/Transmission mounts?

Reservoir on the Power Steering Pump is FULL of nice Clean Fluid?

Loosen tension (or better yet remove) on the belt and spin each pully individually and look for any irregularity. Using the stethescope and see if you hear anything unusual.
